Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be at hand which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person to ensure their unique problems can be handled in rehab.
