Offering gender-specific rehabilitation services has proven beneficial in circumstances where standard treatment settings have not meet expectations, including coping with situations inside a women's life that are unique and distressing. Such issues may have to do with sexual abuse, physical trauma, psychological abuse, eating disorders, one's family and motherhood, or other serious issues that are particular to women. Research shows that women may also get embroiled in drug use more readily than men, and therefore are more vulnerable to illness as a result of drug abuse problems than males as a result. Due to duties in the home, women also tend to postpone trying to find and receiving care for addiction, a situation which can lead to disaster. That said, rehab services for women are designed to ensure that a women's needs will be the focus and priority. Comparable to coed facilities, drug treatment centers which provide treatment services to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a first step. After this step, counselors help women give attention to both general and gender-specific issues which may have brought on their drug abuse. Women also may take advantage of the beneficial support from their female peers, plus some centers which provide rehab services to women provide client beds for her young children.
