Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated probability of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each individual so that their own problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
