Offering gender-specific treatment services has shown to be beneficial in situations where standard rehab settings have not meet expectations, such as coping with situations within a women's life that happen to be unique and traumatic. Such issues may relate to sexual abuse, physical abuse, psychological abuse, eating disorders, one's family and being a mother, or another significant issues which can be specific to women. Research has shown that women also can become involved in abusing drugs more easily than men, and so are more vulnerable to illness due to drug abuse problems than males as a result. Due to duties in their home, women also tend to put off searching for and receiving care for addiction, a situation which can be a catalyst for disaster. Being mindful of this, rehab services for women are designed so that a women's needs would be the focus and priority. Similar to coed programs, alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs which offer treatment solutions to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a 1st step. After this step, counselors help women concentrate on both common and gender-specific concerns which may have brought about their substance abuse. Women also utilize the positive support from other female peers, and several centers that offer rehabilitation services to women also provide client beds for her young children.
