Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each person so that their particular challenges can be handled in rehabilitation.
