Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased probability of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their unique challenges can be addressed in treatment.
