Regrettably, the simple truth is that millions of people choose to drive an automobile while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This not simply puts one's life in danger and puts passengers at risk too, but being caught driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will more often than not lead to severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and in many cases jail time. Often times a person who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying substance abuse problem. The court system understands this, and is therefore inclined to provide DUI and DWI Offenders drug and alcohol rehabilitation instead of other extreme penalties for crime. Agreeing or obliging to participate in drug and alcohol rehab as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eliminate other penalties of the crime, but could decrease the seriousness of such penalties to a large degree. Particularly if the individual willingly participates in alcohol and drug rehabilitation and is a first-time offender. Studies show that a large percentage of folks who do receive alcohol and drug rehabilitation because of a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the court system for comparable charges later on.
