Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug use. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face.
