Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened chance of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for each person so that their own challenges can be remedied in treatment.
