Hearing impaired persons tend to have an elevated likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol.
