Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own problems can be addressed in treatment.
