Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated likelihood of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for each person to ensure that their particular challenges can be handled in rehab.
