Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own personal challenges can be remedied in rehab.
