Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased risk of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their own personal problems can be remedied in treatment.
