Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure their own personal problems can be remedied in rehabilitation.
