Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be at hand which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
