Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support so that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their own personal problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
