Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased risk of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
