Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened risk of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs.
