Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be handled in rehabilitation.
