Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be at hand which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person so that their own personal problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
