Offering gender-specific rehab services has shown to be beneficial in situations where traditional rehab settings have not meet expectations, such as coping with situations within a women's life that are unique and traumatic. Such issues may relate to sexual abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse, eating disorders, one's family members and being a mother, or another really serious issues that are specific to women. Research has shown that women may also become involved in abusing drugs more readily than men, and therefore are more vulnerable to illness as a consequence of dependency problems than males as a result. Due to obligations in the home, women also tend to postpone looking for and undergoing treatment, a situation which can be a catalyst for catastrophe. With this in mind, rehabilitation services for women are created so that a women's needs will be the focus and priority. Similar to coed centers, alcohol and drug rehab programs which offer treatment services to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a 1st step. Following this step, counselors help women concentrate on both common and gender-specific problems which may have brought on their drug abuse. Women also utilize the beneficial support from their female peers, plus some facilities that provide rehabilitation services to women also provide client beds for her children.
