Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be at hand which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
