Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased likelihood of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
