Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
