Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased likelihood of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own personal problems can be handled in rehab.
