Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
