Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Nonetheless, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their particular problems can be addressed in treatment.
