Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater risk of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody so that their own personal problems can be addressed in rehab.
