Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened chance of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
