Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased chance of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services have to be available which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each person so that their own personal challenges can be treated in treatment.
