Unfortunately, it is a fact that millions of people decide to drive an automobile while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol. This not simply puts one's life at risk and puts passengers among others at risk too, but being caught driving while impaired (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will typically lead to severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and in many cases incarceration. Often times anyone who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying drug abuse problem. A legal court system knows this, and it is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders drug and alcohol rehabilitation rather than other serious consequences for their crime. Agreeing or obliging to take part in drug treatment as a DUI/DWI Offender might not completely eradicate other consequences from the crime, but tends to decrease the degree of such consequences to some large degree. Particularly if the individual willingly takes part in drug and alcohol rehab and is also a first time offender. Research has shown that a large percentage of folks who do receive alcohol and drug rehabilitation for a DUI/DWI offense avoid the court system for similar charges in the future.
