Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater risk of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
