Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol.
