Hearing impaired persons generally have an elevated chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support so that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each individual so that their particular challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
