Criminal justice client rehabs are available as a considerably better option than jail time or significant fines for those who have already been convicted of any sort of alcohol or drug related crime. For example, anyone who has been in prison for driving while impaired of drugs or alcohol may qualify for rehabilitation services for his or her problem as an alternative to serving time in prison. The judge may even order that the individual receive rehab, either alone or as well as other sentencing. First-time offenders in particular in many cases are given the ability to select a criminal justice client rehab as opposed to other sentencing, and it is well-advised they benefit from it if it is an option. The concept behind criminal justice client rehabs is that it is far more effective and efficient to invest time and energy into treatment than enforcement of other consequences. Much research has been done to see how effective this strategy is on recidivism rates, i.e. if the criminal justice client returns or not to criminal justice system following rehab. All indicators seem to be quite positive, and criminal justice clients who do take part in rehab have a better probability of remaining out of the judicial system after rehab.
