Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug use. However, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs.
