Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated risk of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be handled in rehabilitation.
