Sadly, it is a fact that millions of people decide to operate a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Doing this not just puts one's life in danger and puts passengers and others at risk too, but being caught driving while impaired (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will more often than not cause severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and in many cases time in jail. Often times a person who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately has an underlying drug abuse problem. The court system understands this, and is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders drug and alcohol rehabilitation instead of other serious penalties because of their crime. Agreeing or obliging to take part in drug and alcohol rehab as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eradicate other effects from the crime, but could decrease the degree of such penalties to some large degree. Specifically if the person willingly takes part in drug and alcohol treatment and is a first-time offender. Studies have shown that a lot of people who do receive alcohol and drug rehab because of a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the court system for similar charges in the future.
