Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated risk of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face.
