Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater probability of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for everybody so that their own challenges can be remedied in rehab.
