Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for everybody so that their unique challenges can be remedied in treatment.
