Offering gender-specific treatment services has shown to be beneficial in circumstances where standard treatment facilities have not meet expectations, like coping with situations within a women's life that happen to be distinctive and painful. Such difficulties may pertain to sexual abuse, physical trauma, psychological abuse, eating disorders, one's family and being a mother, or any other significant issues that are particular to women. Research shows that women can also become involved in drug abuse more readily than men, and are more vulnerable to illness due to addiction issues than males as a result. Because of duties in the home, women also tend to postpone looking for and receiving treatment, a situation which can be a catalyst for disaster. With this in mind, rehabilitation services for women are designed so that a women's needs are the focus and priority. Similar to coed centers, drug and alcohol rehab facilities that offer rehabilitation solutions to women help women through detox and withdrawal as a first step. After this step, counselors help women focus on both general and gender specific concerns which may have brought on their substance abuse. Women also enjoy the constructive support from other female peers, and some centers which provide rehabilitation services to women also provide client beds for her young children.
