Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated chance of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own problems can be addressed in rehab.
