People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own personal challenges can be handled in treatment.
