Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater chance of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support in order that treatment clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be handled in rehab.
