Hearing impaired persons tend to have a greater risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be at hand which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for each individual so that their own challenges can be handled in treatment.
