Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support so that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure that their particular challenges can be remedied in rehab.
