Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their own personal challenges can be treated in treatment.
