Unfortunately, it is a fact that tens of millions of people make the decision to drive a vehicle while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs. Doing so not only puts one's life at risk and puts passengers at risk also, but being caught driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will usually result in severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and in many cases incarceration. Sometimes somebody who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying substance abuse challenge. A legal court system knows this, and is therefore inclined to offer DUI and DWI Offenders drug treatment rather than other severe consequences for his or her crime. Agreeing or obliging to participate in drug and alcohol rehab as a DUI/DWI Offender may not completely eradicate other consequences from the crime, but could decrease the seriousness of such penalties to some great extent. Specifically if the person willingly participates in drug treatment and is also a first-time offender. Research indicates that lots of people who do receive drug and alcohol rehabilitation for a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the court system for similar charges down the road.
